Two suspected armed robbers have been gunned down in separate shooting incidents between alleged robbers and the police at Denkyira Anhwiahwia and Denkyira Abura in the Upper Denkyira West District of the Central Region.
While the incident at Anhwiahwia occurred on the night of Thursday, September 27, that of Abura happened on Friday, September 28.
According to the Upper Denkyira Divisional Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Innocent Avevor, the police at Denkyira Dominase, near Ayamfuri, had information that some masked armed men had blocked the road at Anhwiahwia junction.
He said the police quickly went to the scene with a motorbike and met the three armed men in mask wielding pump action guns and sticks, and one of the men opened fire on the police but the police overpowered them and killed one.
The police say they later identified the deceased as Joshua Kwaa, a.k.a Osco, who was involved in a robbery case pending before the Dunkwa-on-Offin District Court since January 2018, and is on bail.
The police found a pump action gun and four live cartridges on the deceased, while the two remaining suspects with gun wounds managed to escape into the bush.
Chief Supt. Avevor further explained that in the same area, police had information that some robbers from Nkonya were preparing to go on robbery, and based on the tip-off, the police beefed up security at Dominase, and the police spotted a taxi with registration number AS 1020-10 at about 3:30 am Friday dawn,
When the police stopped the taxi, the occupants sped off, leading to a police chase, and on reaching a section of the road near Abura, the robbers opened fire on the police.
The law enforcement officers responded leading to the death of one of the robbers while the rest escaped with gun wounds.
Three pump action guns, one locally manufactured pistol, 38 live cartridges, one pack of tramadol, four mobile phones, and a driver’s license were retrieved from the taxi.
The police are on a manhunt for all the escaped suspects in both incidents and are appealing to various hospitals and healing centres to alert any police station nearby if they receive people with gun wounds.
