Attempts by the police in the Ashanti Region to cover up the death of a suspected armed robber who died in a police cell during investigations have been exposed by the deceased’s family.
Collins Merz, 40, was arrested about a month ago on suspicion of being part of a robbery gang by Tepa police but subsequently transferred to the Regional Police Command for investigations, MyNewsGh.com’s Kwabena Danso-Dapaah reports.
Brother of the deceased, Richard Merz, who spoke to our reporter on Friday, 31 August 2018 accused officers of deliberately killing his brother claiming police did such heinous act to cover their shame after nothing was found against the suspect.
According to the deceased family, they only got to know the death of their relative after they had gone to the police station to look for him.
“He died in the cells and they took him to the mortuary without informing the family and we all believe that Ghana is a country that has accepted democratic principles,” he narrated.
According to the family, the deceased was healthy prior to his remand and the family was not informed of his death before the body was taken to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital morgue believing Collins Merz was tortured.
“The torturing started at the Tepa Police Station. They packed his body with ice blocks for about four hours to impress upon him to admit that he was part”, brother of the deceased alleged.
The family, therefore, threatened to sue the police administration.
