One thing that sets Ghanaian rapper Okyeame Kwame apart from most musicians is his unbridled sense of fashion.
The outfit he donned to this year’s Glitz Style Awards has gotten a lot of reviews from fashion aficionados and lovers.
Talking about his motivation for choosing the outfit, he wrote on his Instagram page that he wanted to do something unusual – something that has not been done before.
“So I called @urtailorstailor and I said ‘I want to go to this year’s glitz fashion awards in a tuxedo but that is expected of everyone. So I want to put on a kente cloth. However, that is also expected. So what can we do to fuse these two very different cultural styles?” Then he said ‘I have an idea!’ And voila!!!! Ta-da!!! He gave me this ensemble!!! Truly #madeinghana and very avant-garde as Madam Joyce Ababio said to me yesterday. Thank u @hamidvijay for accessorizing me as always. Brothers, you are appreciated!! ,” he wrote.
Since 2008 when he released his ‘M’anwensem’ album with an art work that had him in his red suit and a matching designer shades, he has been able to sustain and evolve into a fashion icon whose looks mean more than just aesthetics but also exudes nationalism.
At a pose, OK strikes a distinct image of heritage, avant-garde and a classy outlook that projects Ghanaian and African culture.
This fashion Icon is unafraid to try new things. If you can make it, he can wear it so confidently that you wonder doesn’t he know how strange that attire is – bright colours, strange cuts, smooth styles with rough edges.
Apart from his confidence, Okyeame builds his body to accentuate his style and styles. With bulging biceps and a masculine broad chest, OK brings sexiness back to the game of expression in art.
He defines his style as “intelligent, elegant and African.”
As diverse as OK is, there’s one theme that is always present in his concepts – and that’s the resplendent Ghanaian kente.
Apart from the numerous music awards he has won in the past years, he has also earned some outstanding laurels in the fashion world.
In 2016, he won Male Fashion Celebrity of the Year at the Ghana Fashion Awards. He was the Male Celebrity Slayer in the 2016 Jigwe Awards and in 2017 Glitz Style Awards presented him with the Most Stylish Artiste of the Year award.
