The father of a 14-year-old rape victim at Zabzugu believes his family may be denied justice after the alleged perpetrator was granted bail amid reports of a settlement.
A 59-year-old farmer, Mumuni Amadu, from Zabzugu in the Zabzugu district of the Northern Region had been arraigned in Yendi for defiling the teenage girl.
The alleged crime occurred in March 2018 when the victim visited her classmate and friend, who is the daughter of the accused.
While in her friend’s room, the farmer asked the victim to retrieve a cutlass from his room, and then followed her and raped her.
In July, it was discovered that the girl was five months pregnant after she had fallen ill. She then revealed her ordeal, leading to the arrest of Mumuni Amadu.
He has however been granted bail after some influential persons in the community reportedly pleaded on the victim’s behalf.
The father of the victim, however, told Citi News that he wants to pursue the case, but he is being pushed to forgive the victim.
“For me, I wanted to deal with him, but some influential persons came to plead that we should forgive him, and after he was granted bail, he came home and was telling people that it was the aunt of the victim that he was having affairs with, but the girl also fell in love with him, and he had sex with her,” he recalled.
“I heard this, and I think that this man should not be let off the hook. He even wears white clothes and is greeted by people with congratulations. This man has not regretted a bit, but my hands are tied because of the kind of people who pleaded on his behalf. But if the law could have a way of dealing with him I will be okay” he said.
The judge was reportedly ready to grant the settlement but adjourned the case to September 6, 2018.
